QCC AG Highlights: 2013

Holocaust survivor Rosemary Koczy's work is part of the QCC AG Permanent Collection
and the QCC AG Press has published all three volumes of her memoirs.

It isn't every gallery that can claim it had three exhibits of vast cultural significance on display within one calendar year. In fact, very few could claim one. But the QCC Art Gallery achieved this distinction in 2013, thanks to the bravura efforts of its Executive Director, Faustino Quintanilla.

QCC AG Highlights: 2010

This delicate vessel, displayed at the QCC Art Gallery in 2010, is over 4000 years old.

From ancient Chinese vessels to post-expressionist musings, 2010 was an eclectic year for the QCC Art Gallery. The Gallery's largest installation to date, as well as the verdant, pastoral depictions of a former faculty member also appeared.

Indian Art has made more than one appearance, as well as more than one incarnation, at the QCC Art Gallery. Whether it was ultra modern, infused with a globalized sensibility, or ancient, classic and evocatively erotic, it never ceased to inspire and excite.

QCC Art Film Fest: Chinese Ceramics

Perhaps the oldest works of artistry to appear at the QCC Art Gallery were Chinese ceramic and terracotta figures and vessels, some dating to 3000 B.C.


And if they were not indeed ageless and timeless, the beauty they embodied certainly appeared so.

No Slum Dog Millionaire here...just the grandeur that marked one of the earliest and greatest of human civilizations, that of India.


The remarkable age and quality of the pieces that appeared at the QCC Art Gallery in the summer of 2013 marked this exhibit as truly special.

QCC Art Gallery Video One-Stop

Some of the most impressive and useful content posted on this blog is the video accompaniment for QCC Art Gallery exhibits, but this content would not even exist without the stellar efforts of the Office of Marketing and Communications at QCC-CUNY.

Providing readers with a glimpse of exhibits is an art in itself, requiring many hours of shooting and editing, as well as assuaging the interests of both artists and the Director. It's not an easy job, but they do it well.

And now, you can view much of their work related to the QCC Art Gallery via a newly created YouTube Playlist found here.

Summer in Flight

During the summer of 2010, Dave Henderson installed one of the most remarkable works to appear at the QCC Art Gallery. It was entitled A Brief History of Aviation, a modernist interpretation of medieval fan-vaulting that utterly transformed the main gallery.

If you'd like to watch the artist at work, while he shares his thoughts on the piece, you can enjoy the video. In it you will witness how one man transformed the space within our beloved QCC Art Gallery.

Summer Delight from India

New Light On Early Art Forms of the Indian Subcontinent appeared at the QCC Art Gallery during the warm months of 2013, and remains one of my personal favorites, as it encompassed the great early Indus Valley cultures and religions via some exquisite statuary, pottery and sarcophagi.

Enjoy the splendor of the ancient subcontinent, and the work of a modern master, as each uses the most inert substances, rock and stone, and somehow manages to breathe life into them.

Antiquities at QCC

Whether it is 4000-year-old Chinese pottery, or 2000-year-old Indian statuary, or what appears to be 1000-year-old European architecture, some of the most fascinating and successful exhibits at the QCC Art Gallery have been those relating to antiquity. I suppose Ecclesiastes is right :)

Monday, February 8, 2016 marks the Chinese New Year, which reminds me of the many fine art works the Chinese people and their culture have produced, and how lucky the QCC Art Gallery was to exhibit some of them.

Artist Profile: Donna Page

The vibrant and talented Donna Page.

Donna Page had trouble finding a job as an art instructor when first she moved to NYC in 1979. So, what did she do? She worked in the Leonard Kahan Gallery where she became fascinated with and expert in restoring African Art.


She has since taught at QCC, published in the areas of African Art and its restoration, provided vital assistance to the QCC Art Gallery on a number of occasions, and become known as one of the most able restoration experts for anything from an ancient ceramic to a twentieth century textile.


Unfortunately for us, she's now back home in Madison, Wisconsin, but it was my good fortune to meet this charming lady at a recent opening at the QCC Art Gallery.
