Don't Miss It Entirely

Alright, so you missed the Opening, but that's no reason to miss out altogether. The Liren Wei Collection is still on display in the main room at the QCC Art Gallery, and the amazing African and pre-Columbian pieces donated by Bonnie and David Ross are up the stairs in the second floor gallery.

QCC AG Highlights: 2010

This delicate vessel, displayed at the QCC Art Gallery in 2010, is over 4000 years old.

From ancient Chinese vessels to post-expressionist musings, 2010 was an eclectic year for the QCC Art Gallery. The Gallery's largest installation to date, as well as the verdant, pastoral depictions of a former faculty member also appeared.

QCC Art Gallery Garden

As noted in several blog posts previously, the QCC Art Gallery Garden is a lush, verdant and surprising place. It is comprised of Alumni Walk, an historic lawn, a great view (especially from the pergola), and sculptures...modern and classic...in both the Eastern and Western Traditions.

Looking Up To Wenzhi Zhang

Born in China, Wenzhi Zhang has displayed work in prestigious public and private collections, including the National Art Museum of China, the Malaysia National Art Museum, the Norway National Museum of Art, and the Korean Palace Kiln Museum among others. Wenzhi has also lectured internationally, written several textbooks on Ceramics, and currently teaches Ceramics at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, China.

Gurjinder Singh's Procession

Indian Art has made more than one appearance, as well as more than one incarnation, at the QCC Art Gallery. Whether it was ultra modern, infused with a globalized sensibility, or ancient, classic and evocatively erotic, it never ceased to inspire and excite.

Cultures at QCC: Mali

Between its own strong Permanent Collection and its many stunning visiting exhibits, the QCC Art Gallery has been proud and privileged to present some very fine African Art. Among the others, the amazing art of Mali has stood apart. Just click either of the images below to be reminded of this fact.

Art & Design @ QCC

Congratulations to the Art & Design Department at QCC-CUNY, as it has just received accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). QCC-CUNY is one of only 19 community colleges in the nation as well as the only art program in the CUNY system to receive this prestigious accreditation.

So, if you're interested in an elite art program that is also affordable, consider attending QCC, and perhaps some of your art will be exhibited at the QCC Art Gallery like the works shown below.

Cultures at QCC: Hungarian

With a nod to its Asiatic roots and its profound entrenchment in twentieth century European modernism, Hungarian Art is unique in all the world. And so it is fitting that the QCC Art Gallery, another singular institution, should display works by masters like József Jakovits and many others.

QCC Art Film Fest: Chinese Ceramics

Perhaps the oldest works of artistry to appear at the QCC Art Gallery were Chinese ceramic and terracotta figures and vessels, some dating to 3000 B.C.


And if they were not indeed ageless and timeless, the beauty they embodied certainly appeared so.

Rewoven is Coming to QCC

Here's a sample of work by 24 artists constituting the Rewoven Exhibit at the QCC Art Gallery.

Rewoven: Innovative Fiber Art is an international collaboration between the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan, QCC Art Gallery, and the Godwin Ternbach Museum presenting the work of twenty-four Taiwanese artists, whose extraordinary creativity and commitment to nature and environmental issues are addressed in a convergence of painted, woven, netted, sewn, assembled, and installed artworks.

Thank You, Mr. Chen

Having left his homeland of Taiwan in 1982, Thomas Chen arrived in America speaking no English whatsoever. But he saw an opportunity to pursue his dreams in his new country, and he took it. Working long days and studying English at night, he was able to establish his own company, Crystal Windows & Door Systems, by 1990. Today, Crystal is one of the largest producers of vinyl and aluminum windows in the entire United States.

As if that was not enough, this talented man has found it within his heart to support many causes dealing with art, culture, education, and civic awareness. Over the years, the Chen Family and Crystal employees have donated generously to The American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, South Asian Tsunami Relief, and to the relief efforts for victims and families of the 9/11 World Trade Center attack.

At QCC-CUNY alone, Mr. Chen has committed $250,000 to establish a scholarship endowment fund for the Port of Entry Program, funding for the establishment of the Wenzhi Zhang Sculpture Garden, as well as supporting a number of other initiatives.

Mr. Chen was once quoted as saying, “I don’t feel I need much money. I like the money to go back to the business, to my own community.”

We should all thank Mr. Chen three times: first, for his talent; second, for his generosity; and third, for his humility. May these be an inspiration to all of us.

Artistic talent so often runs in families that it shouldn't surprise us that one of the QCC Art Gallery's favorite collaborators, Mara Sfara, has a daughter about to make a splash on the scene.

To get an inkling of how this talent is emerging, be sure to ascend the stairs to the second floor of the QCC Art Gallery to view Alexandra Appel's Visual Fantasy. There you will find works in many media.

QCC Art Gallery Video One-Stop

Some of the most impressive and useful content posted on this blog is the video accompaniment for QCC Art Gallery exhibits, but this content would not even exist without the stellar efforts of the Office of Marketing and Communications at QCC-CUNY.

Providing readers with a glimpse of exhibits is an art in itself, requiring many hours of shooting and editing, as well as assuaging the interests of both artists and the Director. It's not an easy job, but they do it well.

And now, you can view much of their work related to the QCC Art Gallery via a newly created YouTube Playlist found here.

Before the summer ends, and you become too distracted and stressed by your myriad responsibilities, make time to stroll the grounds outside the QCC Art Gallery. More importantly, visit the QCC Art Gallery.



If it is your first time, you're in for a real eye-opener, and I'm pretty confident it won't be your last visit.

Last Chance at QCC

The wonderfully extensive African Vessel Exhibit that appeared at the QCC Art Gallery in late spring is still largely intact and viewable in the main gallery. Thanks again to the good Doctor for sharing it. Of course, it's only a matter of time before it will move on and you'll have missed your chance to experience it. Don't let that happen. Stop by the Gallery today.

QCC Art Gallery Partner Wenzhi Zhang

Wenzhi Zhang is an internationally recognized artist, scholar and author, whose distinguished career has spanned more than 25 years and has included major exhibitions at the National Art Museum of China, Malaysia National Art Museum, Norway National Museum of Art, and Korean Palace Kiln Museum. Her work also forms the basis of the QCC Sculpture Garden.

Watch the video above to discover how this came about, and why she is pleased “knowing that my(her) work has a permanent presence on the beautiful campus of Queensborough", where the entire college community "experience(s) how my(her) sculptures create harmony between nature and architecture.”

Mohandes Collection at QCC

For the past month, the QCC Art Gallery has been privileged and pleased to bring you the spectacularly diverse and extensive Dr. Ayman El-Mohandes Collection of African Vessels.


But the time is drawing near for the good Doctor's fascinating collection of vessels to pass from our premises. In fact, the exhibit ends on June 12.


If you have yet to do so, then by all means, make your way to the main gallery to experience one of the finest exhibits of its kind.

Scholar and Gentleman

Dr. Ayman El-Mohandes

Dr. Ayman A.E. El-Mohandes is an internationally recognized leader in the field of public health, and currently serves as the Dean of the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Public Health.

He's also an art aficionado, whose exquisite collection of African urns, jugs and amphorae will be on display at the QCC Art Gallery.

Stop by for the Opening on Tuesday, May 10 or thereafter, whichever suits your schedule.
