QCC Art Film Fest: Koczy as Witness

Rosemarie Koczy was a tortured soul. But having survived the Holocaust, who could blame her?

What is more important, she overcame her horrors by becoming a great artist, responsible for sensitizing millions who might never have been so touched had it not been for her gifts.

Her recent exhibit at the QCC Art Gallery was a great triumph, as was the publication of her memoirs by the QCC Art Gallery Press.

Don't Forget Rosemarie

This impressive totem carved by Rosemarie Koczy
stands in the foyer of the KHRCA.

Just a few short years ago, the QCC Art Gallery presented an extensive retrospective of the art of Holocaust survivor Rosemarie Koczy, much of whose work is part of the permanent collection of the QCC Art Gallery.


Alas, as commodious as it may be, there's only so much space within the confines of the QCC Art Gallery. Thus, much of the work is no longer on display.


Luckily though, one of Rosemarie's largest and most impressive woodcuts is always viewable upon entering another venerable cultural institution at QCC, namely the KHRCA, which is always worth a visit when you find time.


Additionally, if you want to feel even closer to Rosemarie or her work, you might also consider buying her three volume memoir published under the auspices of the QCC Art Gallery Press.

Cambre's Vacuus Bacchus

If you are like me, ever since his publication of Black Box, you've been waiting for the next compendium of photos from our talented friend and colleague Javier Cambre. Well, wait no longer.

Javier has just published a second volume of the startling, sensual and surreal photos for which he is best known. His latest is entitled Vacuus Bacchus, and it is populated with many dark, figure studies with striking and dynamic poses, often evoking the erotic, without altogether abandoning classical composition and form.

And as if that was not enough, a sinuous, poetic text accompanies the photos, compliments of another QCC-CUNY colleague, artist Annemarie Coffey, who was co-curator of the Art & Design Exhibit at the QCC Art Gallery in Spring 2015.

So, buy a copy of  Vacuus Bacchus today, and dare to venture forth with Javier as your guide through the prism of his mind's eye.

Danny Simmons at QCC

Expressionism is one of the most dominant and influential of artistic styles, giving rise to many sub-genres in the modern art firmament. It attempts to depict subjective emotion in response to objective reality, and often uses distortion, exaggeration, primitivism, and fantasy melded with the vivid application of formal elements to achieve this end.

The QCC Art Gallery has hosted many prominent artists whose work may be described as expressionistic, but none more powerful and spontaneous than Danny Simmons, who shared his painting as well as his extensive African Art collection not very long ago.

The QCC Press published an accompanying book featuring the work of Mr. Simmons' exhibit, and you can purchase a copy here.
