QCC AG Highlights: 2009

Among several other exhibits that appeared at the QCC Art Gallery in 2009, those devoted to the work of Norman Gorbaty and the Kuba Textiles stood apart with distinction.

Cultures at QCC: Taiwan

Though the exhibit has past, it is not likely to be the last, as many fine works from Formosa have appeared at the QCC Art Gallery in recent years.

You may have missed the opening for Rewoven: Innovative Fiber Art, but there's no reason to miss
the show, as these wonderful works will remain with us at the QCC Art Gallery through June, 2017.

Rewoven's Opening Night was attended by artists, faculty, students and members of the press.

Long Flows Zhuoshui River by Chen Ching-Lin

The Godwin-Ternbach Museum, a part of the Kupferberg Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, located on the Flushing campus of Queens College, City University of New York, organizes cultural exhibitions and programs of contemporary and historical significance for the diverse audiences of Queens and the metropolitan region.

Lectures, symposia, gallery talks, workshops, films, concerts, and tours, as well as digital displays, print and online catalogues, and an active website, illuminate the art on view. And best of all, like the QCC Art Gallery itself, all exhibitions and programs are free.

Rewoven Artist: LuLu Meng

Messages by LuLu Meng

LuLu Meng was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, she received a BA in drama and theater from National Taiwan University and a MFA in Imaging Arts, Photography and Related Media from Rochester Institute of Technology and now resides in New York City.

Her sculptures, installations and photographs strive to embody how individuality and conformity coexist. She is inspired by both the similarities and differences of people and cultures. Meng has participated in many exhibitions throughout Europe, Asia and the United States. And lucky for us, will be one of the more than two dozen artists contributing work to the Rewoven - Innovative Fiber Art exhibit running at the QCC Art Gallery from March 16 through June 17, with an Opening Night event on March 30.

Rewoven Artist: Wen Fu Yu

Wen Fu Yu sits amidst his Giant Bamboo Sculpture Installation
at the Museum Of Contemporary Art in Taipei.

Growing up around his family’s bamboo crafts business, Wen Fu Yu acquired knowledge of traditional craftsmanship at young age, but besides bamboo craft, he has also developed a strong interest in painting, calligraphy and seal carving.

In much of his work, Yu depends on natural materials such as bamboo and feathers to create large-scale installations and environmental art. His work is often familiar in theme, yet infused with imaginative vivacity, encouraging his audience to contemplate those transient elements of our surroundings, such as air, wind, water and time.

Rewoven Artist: Chin Chih Yang

Mathematics of Light by Chin Chih Yang

Chin Chih Yang was born in Taiwan, and has resided for many years in New York City, where he studied at Pratt Institute and Parsons School of Design. Among other honors, he's been a recipient of a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts, a fellowship from the Franklin Furnace, a fellowship from the New York State Council for the Art, and has been granted Swing Space by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council at Governors Island.

His interests in ecology and constructed environments have resulted in installations that have been exhibited widely in North America, Europe, and Asia, in such spaces as Rockefeller Center, the United Nations, the Union Square Park, the Chelsea Museum, the Queens Museum, the Godwin-Ternbach Museum, Exit Art, the Flux Factory, the Taipei Art Fair and the Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival.

His work has been highlighted in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, the Taipei Times, CBS, NY Art Beat, the Village Voice, Time Out New York, and many other publications..

Rewoven Artist: Hui Lin Chuang

On her method, Chuang has commented, "I treat material like another person, a living thing."

Hui Lin Chuang studied plastic arts at the Da Yeh University and the Taipei National University of the Arts in Taiwan, obtaining an MFA. Already, she has had four solo exhibitions in Taiwan and one in Switzerland. She's also participated in several significant group shows in Taiwan and one in Korea. She’s also completed five international residencies throughout Asia and Europe, and in 2013 garnered a Lih-Pao International Sculpture Biennial Award.

Chuang’s sculptures convey delicate webs, dappled sunbeams and frilly coral colonies. Their beauty  is elevated to ethereal heights by the unlikely synthetic  materials the Taiwanese artist employs to create them. And some of her finest recent work will be on display when Rewoven - Innovative Fiber Art opens at the QCC Art Gallery on March 16. Hope you can make it!

Rewoven Artist: Horoshi Jashiki

Opening on Thursday, March 30 from 5 to 8 pm, Rewoven - Innovative Fiber Art will remain at QCC Art Gallery until June 17, and during that time, you can inspect and enjoy the work of over two dozen talented artists with ties to Taiwan and the United States.
