Art of Despair

They are mothers, daughters, sisters, wives and friends. They are workmates, peers and colleagues. They constitute roughly half of the human race(probably the more compassionate and decent half), and yet they suffer in disproportion to their numbers. Whether in Belarus, Guatemala, Kurdistan, Romania or any place else you might name, this is typically the case.

Explore the depths of their suffering by visiting the KHRCA today. And bring your students if you can. Perhaps, if we have the courage to face the truth, we can build a world with less suffering and sadness.

Atsuko Yuma's Ancient Road

A detail from Atsuko Yuma's Yin and Yang
which is part painting and part assemblage, as well as completely stunning
Atsuko Yuma's work is colorful and spiritual, favoring a mix of media over more traditional approaches. It represents an amalgam of influences the artist has absorbed throughout a long career in both the Far East and the West, as filtered through a unique and affirmative sensibility.

Be sure to catch Atsuko Yuma's Ancient Road at the QCC Art Gallery.
It will only be with us from September 22 through October 30.

Farewell Friend

Amadou Njoya, artist, curator and dear friend of the QCC Art Gallery
It has been a difficult year for the QCC Art Gallery, as it has now lost yet another close friend and collaborator, Amadou Njoya. He will be remembered for his generosity and good humor, as he was unfailingly joyful and humble, yet equally dedicated to sharing the wonders of his Cameroonian culture with all who may be interested.

Not long ago, Amadou curated Powerful Arts of Cameroon at the QCC Art Gallery. It included traditional and contemporary objects representing the soul of his beloved Cameroon. Many objects in that visual feast were used during rituals evoking the power of native spirits. May they watch over our friend and speed him on his way to a better world.

Ever enthusiastic to share his expertise, Amadou engages a visitor to his opening at the QCC AG.

Other Spaces: Admin Building Lobby

This 11 foot work towers over those mulling about the QCC Admin Building lobby.
Rashidi Yekini (23 October 1963 – 4 May 2012) was a legendary striker for the Nigerian National Football Team. His professional career spanned more than two decades, during which he scored 37 goals in international competition, representing his nation in five major tournaments. These included two World Cups in which he scored his nation's first-ever goal in the competition.

And now a bigger-than-life wood-carved statue memorializes him in the lobby of the Administration Building just outside the Registrar's Office. Take a closer look, the next time you are in the vicinity.

Kith and Kin at QCC

Leanne Menguito's work was among many others on display at the QCC AG.
Aspiring artists from the High School for Art and Business engaged in several lessons concerning family as a central theme, where multiple artistic platforms were explored, including digital film, graphic design, painting, and illustration. Some of these highly emotive and revelatory works were chosen to grace the walls of our own QCC Art Gallery. In case you missed it, you can at least enjoy Kin Contemplations via the fine videography below that was directed and edited by Victor Pena.

Performing Arts at QCC

The QPAC Theater is in the heart of the Humanities Building at QCC-CUNY.
Despite the main focus of this blog, never think that art begins and ends with painting and sculpture. For there is another amazing resource on the QCC campus, namely the Queensborough Performing Arts Center(QPAC), that gives bold testimony to the power and majesty of that which makes us laugh, sing, dance and feel with immediacy and intensity.

Every year QPAC, quite literally, provides a stage for world-class entertainment to visit us in our own backyard of Queens. Performances are diverse in form and culture, but have a couple of things in common, they are uniformly excellent and great bargains.

See for yourself: click here to view a full calendar of offerings for the coming season.
The Russian National Ballet performs Swan Lake at QPAC. They'll be returning to do so again in Spring 2017.

D.V.Cady's Work

Cady's work is now on display at the QCC Art Gallery

“I seek figurative poses that can be translated into masses and voids, which abstractly represent the human figure and the human condition. Nature is my primary inspiration.”
......D.V.Cady
