A Not-So Distant Exhibit

As a photographer for TIME Magazine, Robert Nickelsberg first observed Afghanistan in 1988 and continued to chronicle that nation’s descent into brutal civil war and subsequent invasion by American forces.

A compilation of Nickelsberg's work in Afghanistan appeared at the QCC Art Gallery earlier this year and can still be experienced via his book: Afghanistan: A Distant War, which has been listed by Amazon as one of the best books of 2014.

Fifth, and Last, Contest Query

Meg Tarafdar
Meg Tarafdar of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning(CETL) was the first film buff to swoop in and answer the fourth contest question correctly. Our compliments to Meg for this ready response and for all of her other efforts at QCC.

The fourth contest answer:
The late, great H.R.Giger, who shared the Oscar for Best Visual Effects for his work on Alien, exhibited work at the QCC Art Gallery as part of an exhibit called Visionaries: Art of the Fantastic.

The fifth, and last, contest question:
Which artist, who has exhibited work at the QCC AG, has familial ties to Rap legends RUN-DMC?

Her work will be with us for a couple more months, but not forever.

QCC Art Gallery Press

Strange as it may seem, very few members of the QCC-CUNY community are aware that the QCC Art Gallery also publishes books, often but not always, to accompany its exhibits.

The images below are the cover art from some of the more recent publications,. Click any cover to find out more information and to secure your copy today.

Winner 3, Question 4

Robert Izzo
Question #3 was a greater challenge for this blog's readership, but true to form, you produced a winner in Robert Izzo of the Academic Literacy Department. And Robert would have answered it correctly even sooner, except he took a couple of days to get around to reading his email.

The third contest answer:
Ultra Violet, who collaborated with Andy Warhol, and Marcel Salinas, who collaborated with Picasso, both had exhibitions at the QCC Art Gallery.

This fourth contest question:
Which artist, who has exhibited work at the QCC Art Gallery, shared an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects?

If you believe you know the answer, simply click the contact link on the upper right to submit your response.

The first respondent to answer correctly will receive a small token of their victory as well as acknowledgement in this space.

Chinese Art: Inside and Outside

Chinese sculptures near the QCC AG entrance

What are these mysterious ceramic sculptures lining the QCC Art Gallery's exterior?

Well, they date to an earlier Chinese exhibit that was featured at this blog, but more importantly, they are intriguing and oddly compelling.

If your taste runs toward all things Asian, or even if it does not, stop by the QCC Art Gallery to view it's current exhibit that includes works from a number of Asian cultures, including more work from our friends in China.

Brother and Sister Act at QCC

Gurjinder & Bharat Singh pose
in front of Bharat's Prayer for World Peace

Bharat Singh and his younger sister Gurjinder Singh are accomplished painters, sculptors and actors.

Since their earliest years they have not only been intrigued with their mother culture of India, but also by many others, principally China. It is there that each has been trained and has produced large works, like the one pictured at left, to beautify some of the newly expanding and emerging cities of China.

Come to the QCC Art Gallery to see several of their works, as each is represented in the Asia: Contemporary Views exhibit that is now on display.

Another Winner, Another Question

Tirandai Hemraj-Benny
Thanks to all who participated, as once again we had quite a few respondents with the correct answer.

On the other hand, we only had one respondent who logged the correct answer within eleven minutes of the question being posted. That distinction belongs to Tirandai Hemraj-Benny of our award-winning Chemistry Department. With such speed and precision, it is no wonder why they win so many awards. Well done, Tirandai!

The second contest answer:
The structure now housing the QCC Art Gallery originally served as the clubhouse for the Oakland Lake Country Club golf course.

The third contest question:
Works by Warhol and by Picasso have exhibited at the QCC AG. Can you name two of their collaborators, one each, whose work has also shown there?

Remember, if you believe you know the answer, simply click the contact link on the upper right to submit your response.

After a week or so, I'll see who was first to submit a correct answer. That respondent will receive a small token of their victory as well as acknowledgement in this space.

Angels Hovering No More

According to recent reports, the angels once hovering about the second floor of the QCC Art Gallery have flown the coop. But they're sure to be replaced by something equally enticing.

So, next time you visit, be sure to check the second floor for developments.
You're bound to be pleasantly surprised.

Sculptural Splendor at QCC

Joe Brown's "Two Athletes" just outside
the entrance of the QCC Art Gallery

How many of you have walked past these acrobats just outside the QCC Art Gallery, but never took the time to notice them? Well, it's about time that you did.

Do yourself a favor and take a break some time soon.

Stroll Alumni Walk just outside the QCC Art Gallery. Enjoy the various sculptures you'll encounter. Sit on a park bench. Lie under the Pergola. But whatever you do, please leave your desktop, gadgets and phones behind. You'll be amazed how much good a 15-minute vacation can provide.

We Have A Winner

Josephine Pantaleo
You have to get up pretty early in the morning to beat Josephine Pantaleo, the Director of the Academic Literacy Learning Center and of the Service Learning Project at QCC-CUNY.

Although a number of our colleagues answered the first contest question correctly, Josephine responded nine minutes after the question was posed, and so we crown her the winner of the first contest. Congratulations for such stellar alacrity, Josephine!

The first contest answer:
The three principal cultural institutions at QCC-CUNY are the Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives, the Performing Arts Center: QPAC, and the QCC Art Gallery.

The second contest question:
When first built, what was the function of the Oakland Building that now houses the QCC Art Gallery?

Remember, if you are a member of the QCC-CUNY faculty, staff, or student-body and believe you know the answer, simply click the contact link on the upper right to submit your response.

After a week or so, I'll see who was first to submit a correct answer. That respondent will receive a small token of their victory as well as acknowledgement in this space.
