Outside of intellectual and artistic circles, surrealist sculptor József Jakovits (1909-94) is little known in his native Hungary.
Though the Hungarian National Gallery labels him a “Post-Surrealist”, Jakovits viewed himself as a Primitivist, declaring his main sources of inspiration to be cave painting and tribal art.
Largely owing to an ascetic lifestyle and asocial tendencies, Jakovits remained, to a significant extent, unknown in his new country, the United States, despite having lived as a practicing artist in New York City between 1965 and 1987.
Come see his extraordinary work at the QCC Art Gallery, where it will be displayed until February 22, 2015.
