Artist, Dennis Vern Cady

This talented painter, sculptor, print-maker, and designer's work is included in the permanent collections of such venerable institutions as MOMA, the US Department of State, and the NYPL. And lucky you, some gorgeous examples of his work are now on display in the main gallery of the QCC Art Gallery.

So visit D.V.Cady's exhibit, Natural Resources, at the QCC Art Gallery today. It will be gone too soon, October 2.
Sit awhile and contemplate the beautiful creations of D.V.Cady.

DaDa

You may recall Rudy Ernst...artist...inventor...economist...and did you know?...author! Yes, Rudy has published quite a bit in his career, and among the rest, two notable works via the auspices of the QCC Art Gallery Press.

If you like DaDa, or Rudy, or just an absurd enthusiasm for anarchic creation,

Meet the Director

Some interesting pieces lying about the Director's office.
It's hard for me to contemplate that many of my colleagues and the vast majority of our students have yet to enter the QCC Art Gallery. After all, it's a landmark building housing many treasures from various cultures and epochs. On top of that, it has numerous excellent visiting exhibits every year, and publishes acclaimed tomes to accompany these exhibits.

And as if that was not enough, the place is run by a wonderful character named Faustino Quintanilla, who can usually be found hard at work in his second floor offices and could really use a break. So, the next time you are in the vicinity of the Gallery, step in, enjoy the art, and ascend the stairs to meet the man that makes it all possible.

The Surreal at QCC

An untitled sculpture by Josef Jakovits

Surrealism is one of the most famous art movements of the Modernist era. It has come to be remembered for its of visceral, aesthetically incongruous images like the one at left.

It was poet AndrĂ© Breton, who in his 1924 Surrealist Manifesto declared the group’s intention to unite consciousness with unconsciousness.

Surrealists worked in a variety of media, including painting, poetry, literature, sculpture, and film. But soon splintered into several other directions.

Among those who might be considered a post-surrealist is the Hungarian Josef Jakovits, whose works have appeared in a couple of significant QCC Art Gallery exhibits.

Jakovits viewed himself as a Primitivist, declaring his main sources to be cave painting, the tribal art of primitive peoples, and the archaic periods of the great religious cultures including Judaic lettering and mysticism.

A Picasso Summer

Though I mentioned that some of these summer-related articles were an attempt to popularize oft neglected, yet excellent, exhibits of the QCC Art Gallery, this post is an exception.

A Perpetual Metamorphosis: Picasso, which appeared at the QCC Art Gallery from May 22 until July 27 2008 was record-breaker in terms of attendance, with thousands of interested parties throughout our region and beyond making the trek to view this extensive collection comprising many aspects of Picasso the printmaker.

In case you'd like a more intimate knowledge of just which works appeared, you can purchase the accompanying book published by the QCC Art Gallery Press with the cooperation and inspiration of the Myra and Sandy Kirschenbaum Collection.

Summer in Flight

During the summer of 2010, Dave Henderson installed one of the most remarkable works to appear at the QCC Art Gallery. It was entitled A Brief History of Aviation, a modernist interpretation of medieval fan-vaulting that utterly transformed the main gallery.

If you'd like to watch the artist at work, while he shares his thoughts on the piece, you can enjoy the video. In it you will witness how one man transformed the space within our beloved QCC Art Gallery.
